Located across the Bay from Mobile, in Baldwin County, are the communities of Blakeley, Spanish Fort, Malbis, Daphne, Montrose, Fairhope and Point Clear. The area is commonly called the "Eastern Shore." The cities of Spanish Fort, Daphne and Fairhope are the largest cities in the area. Spanish Fort, with 4,500 residents, is located to the North, near the mouth of the Tensaw River. Daphne, the largest of the three, with 16,000 residents, is known as the "Jubilee City" and is situated along I-10 and US Highway 98. The quaint village of Fairhope sits father south on the Bay and has a population of 13,000. Point Clear, a community South of Fairhope is the location of "The Grand Hotel", the queen of antebellum Southern resorts, and is known for its beautiful bay front homes/estates. All of the communities are known for their "laid back" life styles, small town atmosphere, community involvement and high quality of life. One of the most popular and highly anticipated events on the Eastern Shore is the annual Arts and Craft Festival in Fairhope. Initially held in 1952, in an effort to draw more visitors from the Mobile area, the festival features artists and craftsmen from all over the United States as well as entertainment, food and fun. Another annual event is the "Jubilee Festival" in Daphne. Over the past decade the area has had substantial economic and population growth thanks to its close proximity to the Mobile Metropolitan area and the sugar white beaches on the Gulf of Mexico in South Baldwin County. Another big draw to the area is the wide variety of homes and the affordability of those homes, many of which have river or Bay front locations.
